I wanted to explore somewhere I’d never been before, so I headed to Copper Breaks in Texas for a weekend trip.
On one of the first trails I hiked I came across a lone plant surrounded by red dirt and rock in an opening in the path. It struck me as something special because of how small it was, but it had still grown there in spite of everything around it. I found that a close up shot worked best to separate it and show all of it’s delicate details.
This image reminds me of one I took earlier in the year in New Mexico. I like how it captures the effect of time and weather in the patterns and texture carved into the rock. I chose to make this picture black and white because I felt that it created a sense of moment and age.
As the day was drawing to a close I found this cactus with bright orange buds on top. I decided to have a seat and just enjoy the rugged simplicity of what I had found while exploring.
I had no idea what to expect when I set out for Copper Breaks. Everything is an experiment, and you can’t know for sure what you will find until you set out and see things for yourself.
