As I said in my first post of the year, one of my goals is to get better at astrophotography. In the last few months I soaked up every bit of information I could about the process, did some planning, and got this shot fairly local to me. Along with all the new photography information I’ve also picked up some basic astronomy information. The bright star just above the horizon, almost in the middle of the frame, actually isn’t a star at all, that’s Jupiter. All the new information has allowed me to take a huge leap forward, but just as important was getting out and practicing, and learning through trial and error. I would say the greatest key thing I’ve learned is that the image needs to be interesting by itself, and the night sky should add more interest to the shot. Astrophotography isn’t just about taking pictures of the stars, it’s about landscape photography at night.
